The MTV VMAs averaged 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV, rising 51% year over year for the show’s best same-day result since 2015.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards reached 8.43 million viewers across CBS, MTV and an MTV encore, delivering the ceremony’s strongest same-day audience since 2015. The early Nielsen figure represents a 51% increase from the comparable 2025 broadcast.
How the audience was counted
Variety and Deadline reported the total from Nielsen’s live-plus-same-day fast national data. CBS carried most of the audience with 7.61 million viewers, up from 5 million last year. MTV’s simulcast drew 686,000 viewers, while a later replay added another 142,000.
The comparison is unusually clean because last year’s show also aired on CBS and MTV and included an MTV encore. That 2025 package averaged about 5.6 million viewers. Even so, the latest number is preliminary and could shift when final ratings are released.
A football boost and a packed show
An NFL overrun on CBS likely helped expose the awards to a larger lead-in audience. The football game pushed the television start to 7:51 p.m. ET, even though the event proceeded at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. That scheduling advantage should be considered alongside the year-over-year gain rather than treated as a separate audience.
The ceremony opened with Madonna’s first VMAs performance in 23 years, joined by Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Taylor Swift won Video of the Year, received the inaugural Artist Director honor and premiered the video for “Patient Zero.” Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, while the broadcast also featured tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael.
The 8.43 million average remains below the 12.73 million viewers recorded in 2015, but it reverses the idea that the VMAs cannot create a broad live television moment. The dual-network strategy gave the show the reach of CBS while preserving its long association with MTV.
For broadcasters, the result is another sign that a live event can still break through when recognizable stars, major performances and a strong lead-in align. Final Nielsen numbers will determine the precise total, but the fast nationals already establish the show’s best same-day performance in more than a decade.
