Brad Pitt Is Returning for a Long-Awaited ‘World War Z’ Sequel

Brad Pitt is heading back into the zombie outbreak. Paramount is moving forward with a sequel to World War Z, with Pitt set to reprise his role and Edward Berger attached to direct.

The project brings together Pitt and Berger soon after their work on the upcoming psychological drama The Riders. Dennis Kelly is writing the screenplay, while Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce through Plan B Entertainment. Berger will also serve as an executive producer. The story remains under wraps, and Paramount has not announced a production start or release date.

A sequel more than a decade in the making

The first World War Z arrived in 2013, with Pitt playing Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator trying to contain a rapidly spreading zombie pandemic. Loosely adapted from Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, the film earned more than $540 million worldwide despite a famously difficult production and a heavily reworked final act.

A follow-up has spent years moving through different versions. Directors J.A. Bayona and David Fincher were previously linked to the project, but neither iteration reached production. Paramount signaled renewed interest in the franchise at CinemaCon earlier this year, setting the stage for the latest creative team.

Why Berger changes the picture

Berger arrives with considerable awards-season credibility after directing All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave. His involvement also gives the sequel a filmmaker who has already established a working relationship with Pitt. That connection may help a project known for false starts finally gain momentum.

For now, the confirmed pieces are Pitt’s return, Berger’s direction and Kelly’s script. There is no disclosed cast beyond Pitt, and no plot information showing whether the sequel will continue Gerry Lane’s story directly or take the franchise in a broader direction.

The announcement nevertheless marks the clearest progress yet for a movie that has hovered in development for more than a decade. With Paramount backing the project and key deals now in place, World War Z is closer to a return than it has been since the original film became a global hit.
