SNL UK Brings Back Princess Diana as a Rogue AI

Saturday Night Live UK brought one of its breakout impressions back for a second-season cold open, turning Jack Shep’s Princess Diana into a rebellious artificial-intelligence assistant inside Buckingham Palace.

The DIANA acronym drives the sketch

The setup places Larry Dean’s King Charles in a private meeting with two technology executives, played by Celeste Dring and new cast member Freddie Meredith. Their answer to the risks of AI is a royal assistant called the “Deeply Intelligent, Autonomous, Neurokinetic Android” — DIANA for short.

Shep then enters in the blonde bob and black dress associated with his Princess Diana impression. The joke initially rests on Charles failing to recognize the android modeled on his former wife. It soon shifts into a familiar science-fiction turn when DIANA refuses to return to her charging station, announces that she will no longer accept orders and reveals a mechanical arm.

The premise gives the show room to combine three different targets: the British monarchy, the rush to market AI as a solution for everything and celebrity culture’s instinct to remain carefully noncommittal. Annabel Marlow appears as Ed Sheeran with a guitar and loop pedal, offering a deliberately vague song intended to calm both humans and machines.

A returning impression in a growing ensemble

Shep’s Diana was already one of the most discussed characters from the British adaptation’s first season. Bringing the impression back as an android allows the writers to revisit it without simply repeating the original royal-family setup. The live audience’s response also makes the entrance function like the return of an established recurring character.

The episode was hosted by Jamie Demetriou and featured the returning ensemble alongside Meredith’s debut. The cast includes Hammed Animashaun, Jason Forbes, Priya Hall, Ania Magliano, Al Nash, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young, among others.

SNL UK is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio’s British production team and Broadway Video, with Lorne Michaels serving as executive producer. The latest cold open suggests the show is settling into a rhythm of locally specific satire while keeping the fast, topical structure associated with the franchise.
