Dead Kennedys guitarist East Bay Ray has disclosed a Parkinson’s diagnosis and says he intends to perform for as long as his health allows.
East Bay Ray, the founding guitarist of Dead Kennedys, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The band’s management announced the diagnosis on Tuesday, September 22, while saying the musician intends to continue performing and touring for as long as his health allows.
The statement also thanked listeners for their support. It did not disclose when Ray received the diagnosis, describe his symptoms or outline any changes to his treatment or day-to-day schedule.
Upcoming shows remain on the calendar
Ray is still expected to appear with Dead Kennedys if his health permits. The band has a short run of West Coast dates scheduled for October, beginning in Seattle on October 6 and ending in Riverside, California, on October 11.
That conditional plan keeps the announcement focused on Ray’s own intentions without promising more than his health may allow. No cancellation or replacement was announced alongside the diagnosis.
A defining guitarist in American punk
The 67-year-old musician, born Raymond John Pepperell, co-founded Dead Kennedys in San Francisco in 1978. His sharp, surf-influenced guitar style became a crucial part of the band’s sound as it emerged as one of the most distinctive acts in American punk.
Dead Kennedys broke up in 1986 and reunited without original singer Jello Biafra in 2001. Ray and bassist Klaus Flouride remain from the founding lineup. Ron “Skip” Greer has served as the group’s lead vocalist since 2008, and Steve Wilson joined on drums after longtime drummer D.H. Peligro died in 2022.
The diagnosis arrives during an active period for the touring lineup rather than as a retirement notice. Ray’s statement leaves room for the realities of a progressive neurological condition, but it also makes his immediate goal clear: he wants to stay connected to the stage and the music he helped build.
For fans, the next confirmed point of reference is the October run. Any further touring decisions will depend on Ray’s health and official updates from the band.
