Universal has become 2026’s first studio to cross $5 billion worldwide, powered by a broad slate of theatrical hits across several labels.

Universal has become the first Hollywood studio to pass $5 billion at the worldwide box office in 2026, reaching a benchmark it had previously cleared only twice. The company’s year-to-date total stands at $1.788 billion in North America and $3.218 billion from international markets.

The result gives Universal a notable lead in a year shaped by a mix of giant franchise releases, filmmaker-led spectacles and lower-budget breakouts. It also marks the studio’s third $5 billion calendar year, following earlier runs in 2015 and 2017.

A slate with several kinds of hits

The biggest contributor has been Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has earned more than $1.7 billion worldwide and become Universal’s highest-grossing release. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael also joined the billion-dollar club. Universal handled the latter film outside North America, while Lionsgate distributed it domestically.

The studio’s performance has not rested on those three titles alone. Illumination’s Minions & Monsters added another major family release, while Focus Features scored an unusually large commercial success with the thriller Obsession. That film has reached roughly $519 million globally after being produced on a far smaller scale than the year’s tentpoles.

Why the milestone matters

Crossing $5 billion before the final quarter underscores the value of a varied theatrical calendar. Universal’s total spans releases from Universal Pictures, Illumination, DreamWorks Animation and Focus Features, giving the company multiple routes to audiences instead of relying on a single brand.

The year is not finished. Universal still has titles scheduled across animation, horror, comedy and prestige drama, including Other Mommy, a new Sense & Sensibility, Focker-in-Law, Violent Night 2 and Robert Eggers’ Werwulf. The studio has already led the worldwide weekend box office 11 times this year. Those remaining films will determine how far beyond the milestone Universal can climb by the end of December.
