The Big Bang Theory topped Nielsen's overall streaming chart with 1.141 billion minutes watched across 281 episodes on HBO Max.

The Big Bang Theory has reached the top of Nielsen’s overall U.S. streaming chart, more than seven years after the CBS sitcom ended its original run. The comedy generated 1.141 billion viewing minutes during the week of July 27 through August 2, according to Nielsen’s published Top 10 data.

A large library becomes a streaming advantage

Nielsen ranked the series first across all measured streaming programs and movies for the week. Its 281 episodes were available on HBO Max, giving viewers an unusually deep catalog to revisit and helping the show accumulate minutes across twelve seasons.

The performance placed The Big Bang Theory ahead of Bluey, which recorded 911 million minutes, and the movie The Devil Wears Prada 2, which drew 885 million. House of the Dragon followed with 884 million minutes, while the Netflix limited series The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare rounded out the top five at 864 million.

ScreenRant reported that this was the first time the sitcom had taken the No. 1 position on Nielsen’s overall list. The outlet noted that the show had already exceeded one billion viewing minutes in each of the two preceding weeks, making the chart victory the peak of a sustained run rather than a one-week revival.

A hit that outlived its finale

The original series aired from 2007 to 2019 and built its audience over time. Its ensemble comedy about scientists, friends and relationships became one of broadcast television’s defining sitcoms, eventually producing twelve seasons and a finale that closed the main story without ending the franchise.

Streaming has given that large episode count a second life. Viewers can move through the series from the beginning, revisit favorite episodes or discover it after watching related shows. The wider universe now includes Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage and Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

The Nielsen result is a reminder that streaming competition is not limited to new premieres. A familiar sitcom with hundreds of episodes can challenge current movies and prestige dramas when comfort viewing, discovery and franchise interest converge.

For The Big Bang Theory, the latest chart offers a new milestone long after the studio audience applauded its final scene: the old broadcast giant is now a streaming No. 1.
