Taylor Swift passed Beyoncé to become the most-awarded artist in MTV VMAs history, adding video of the year and a directing honor.
Taylor Swift has become the most-awarded artist in MTV Video Music Awards history. She entered Sunday night’s ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 wins, then moved ahead during a show that added three more honors to her career total.
A record built on video and direction
The biggest prize was video of the year for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Swift also received the inaugural Artist-Director award, a new honor recognizing musicians whose work behind the camera has advanced music-video storytelling. The results lifted her past the previous all-time mark and underlined how central directing has become to her visual career.
During her acceptance remarks, Swift reflected on two decades of making music videos. She said she has participated in nearly 60 videos and has written and directed 18 of them. Her directing résumé includes “The Man,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero” and “Bejeweled,” following an early co-directing credit on “Mine.”
Swift also used the stage to honor Dolly Parton, calling her the “ultimate showgirl” while discussing the storytelling power of Parton’s songs. The tribute connected Swift’s new milestone to an artist whose writing and performance legacy has influenced generations of pop and country musicians.
A busy night beyond the record
The ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater also served as the premiere platform for Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. The song appears on The Life of a Showgirl: Encore, a four-track expansion released days before the awards.
Swift was not the night’s only major winner. Madonna won artist of the year, best dance and best collaboration, while Lisa became the first Asian solo artist to win best pop. British singer Sienna Spiro was named best new artist, and BTS collected honors including song of the year.
Still, the all-time record gave Swift the ceremony’s defining statistic. VMAs wins span performance, production and fan-facing categories, but this year’s combination of video of the year and a directing honor made the milestone especially focused on the visual side of her work. After arriving level at 30, she left with sole possession of the awards show’s top career tally.
