Jennifer Lawrence will star in Zach Cregger’s original sci-fi thriller The Flood, set for a theatrical release in August 2028.

Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to lead The Flood, the original science-fiction thriller that will reunite filmmaker Zach Cregger with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. The studio has dated the movie for Aug. 11, 2028, giving the project a firm theatrical destination even as its story remains deliberately secret.

A major star joins Cregger’s next original film

Cregger will write, direct and produce the movie from his own idea. Amblin Entertainment is producing alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment, the company behind several of Cregger’s genre projects. Warner Bros. movie chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy described Lawrence as central to the filmmaker’s “bold and wholly original vision,” while Cregger said he was excited to see what she would bring to the role.

The announcement offers no character details, additional casting or plot summary. That tight control keeps the attention on the pairing itself: an Oscar-winning performer known for both franchise spectacle and intimate drama working with a director whose recent films have mixed horror, mystery and sharp shifts in tone. Production is expected to begin in Europe in early 2027, according to industry reporting.

Lawrence adds another high-profile project

Lawrence won the Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook and became a global star through The Hunger Games. Her more recent work has ranged from the comedy No Hard Feelings to the drama Die My Love. She is also attached to What Happens at Night, directed by Martin Scorsese, and is set to appear in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping.

For Cregger, The Flood continues a run of studio-scale original projects after Barbarian and Weapons. His new deal with New Line signals that the companies are betting on another filmmaker-driven genre release rather than a familiar franchise. For now, the Aug. 2028 date, Lawrence’s casting and the producing team are the confirmed pieces; the movie’s world and supporting cast are still being kept under wraps.
