Hailee Steinfeld says recording Disney’s ‘Hexed’ across her pregnancy and early motherhood made the animated fantasy deeply personal.
Hailee Steinfeld is bringing a particularly personal connection to Disney Animation’s Hexed, revealing that she began recording the movie while pregnant and completed her work after the birth of her daughter.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Steinfeld described joining an original Disney animated film as a dream opportunity. She voices Billie Doe, an unconventional teenager whose differences turn out to be signs of hidden magical power.
A coming-of-age story built around hidden power
Disney’s official synopsis places Billie at the center of a journey that begins in suburbia and opens into a vast witch realm called Hexe. Her abilities force her to team up with her more cautious mother, Alice, voiced by Rashida Jones. Together, they encounter family secrets with consequences for the wider world of witches.
Steinfeld framed the film as a story about self-discovery and learning to use an inner power for good. That theme, she explained, felt especially resonant because the recording process overlapped with a major transformation in her own life. Her comments add a human layer to a project whose fantasy premise is already centered on change, identity and the bond between a mother and daughter.
The creative team and cast behind Hexed
Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand directed the animated feature, with Josie Trinidad serving as co-director. Roy Conli and Yvett Merino produced it. The announced voice cast also includes Tracey Ullman as the enchanted pen Ms. Quill and Stephen Fry as a magical journal named Elias Quire.
The film gives Steinfeld another major voice role after her work as Gwen Stacy in the animated Spider-Verse movies. Her career has continued to move between film, television and music, but Hexed places her at the center of a new Disney world rather than an established franchise.
Hexed is scheduled to open in theaters on November 25, 2026. Disney currently lists the movie as not yet rated, leaving its magical mother-daughter adventure positioned as a Thanksgiving release for family audiences.
