Emily Blunt reunites with Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro for ‘Sicario 3,’ with Padraic McKinley directing a Steven Knight script.
The original Sicario trio is preparing to step back into the franchise’s tense border-war world. Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro are attached to return for a third film, bringing together the three performers who anchored Denis Villeneuve’s 2015 thriller.
The original team is back
Blunt is expected to reprise her role as FBI agent Kate Macer, while Brolin and Del Toro return as government operative Matt Graver and former prosecutor-turned-assassin Alejandro Gillick. Blunt sat out the 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, making her comeback the most significant change to the franchise’s familiar lineup.
Padraic McKinley, whose feature directing debut The Weight premiered at Sundance, is attached to direct. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the screenplay. Black Label Media and Thunder Road are producing, with the project expected to be offered to potential studio partners. Plot details have not been announced.
A long-discussed third chapter moves forward
A third Sicario installment has been discussed for years, including before the 2023 Hollywood writers’ strike slowed development. Producers previously described the story as the closing chapter of a trilogy built around the morally compromised world introduced by screenwriter Taylor Sheridan.
The new creative team also marks another shift behind the camera. Villeneuve directed the first movie, while Stefano Sollima took over for the sequel. McKinley now inherits a series known for its stark atmosphere, political tension and deliberately uneasy view of the drug war.
The return of all three leads gives the film a clear connection to the original. Kate’s perspective provided the first movie with its moral center, while Alejandro and Matt embodied the covert machinery operating around her. Reuniting them creates room to revisit the consequences of the first mission rather than simply extending the action.
Production is reportedly being targeted for early 2027, though a release date and distributor have not been confirmed. Until those pieces are set, the major news is the reunion itself: after more than a decade, Blunt, Brolin and Del Toro are once again headed into Sicario territory together.
