Frank Mancuso Sr., the marketing executive who rose to lead Paramount and MGM through major Hollywood eras, has died at age 93.
Frank Mancuso Sr., the longtime studio executive who led Paramount Pictures and later MGM, died October 1 at his Los Angeles home from complications of cancer, according to a family statement. He was 93.
From theater usher to studio chief
Mancuso’s path through Hollywood began far from the executive suite. Born in Buffalo, New York, he worked as a theater usher and film buyer before building a career in distribution and marketing. He spent nearly three decades at Paramount, working in Toronto, Buffalo and Los Angeles, and rose to run the studio in 1984 after Barry Diller’s departure.
His background gave him an unusually close view of how audiences found movies. Before taking the top job, he backed release strategies that challenged industry habits, including a summer opening for An Officer and a Gentleman and a November launch for Terms of Endearment. He also helped connect films, soundtracks and music videos during the eras of Saturday Night Fever and Flashdance.
A run of major films and television hits
Paramount finished first at the domestic box office in 1986 and 1987 under Mancuso’s leadership. The period produced films including Top Gun, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Fatal Attraction, The Untouchables and Beverly Hills Cop II. The studio’s television side also carried enduring titles such as Cheers, Family Ties, Entertainment Tonight and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
After leaving Paramount in 1991, Mancuso returned to studio leadership at MGM in 1993. He revived United Artists, expanded the company through acquisitions and oversaw a period that included Stargate, Get Shorty, The Birdcage and three James Bond releases. He also helped prepare MGM for a $1.3 billion sale in 1996 and remained chairman until 1999.
Mancuso’s career reflected an era when marketing and distribution expertise could become the foundation for running an entire studio. He is survived by family members including his son, producer Frank Mancuso Jr.
