Netflix has ordered a Bridgerton limited series about young Lady Violet and Edmund, with Shonda Rhimes returning as writer and co-showrunner.

Netflix is expanding the Bridgerton universe with an untitled limited series about a young Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. The new prequel puts the family matriarch’s own love story at the center after four seasons of watching her guide the next generation through the marriage market.

The streamer has not announced the actors who will play the younger couple. Ruth Gemmell, who portrays the widowed Violet on the flagship series, remains the familiar face of the character, but the project will travel back to a much earlier chapter of her life.

Shonda Rhimes returns to the page

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write, executive produce and serve as co-showrunners. The collaboration reunites the pair after Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the 2023 limited series that followed the young queen’s relationship with King George III.

Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, will direct the Violet project and executive produce alongside Betsy Beers. Deadline reports that this is Rhimes’ first time writing another series since creating and executive producing the earlier prequel.

Unlike Queen Charlotte, which built an original backstory around characters adapted from Julia Quinn’s novels, the Violet series has an existing literary starting point. Quinn’s novella Violet in Bloom includes Violet and Edmund’s courtship, giving the writers a framework while leaving room to develop a larger screen narrative.

The Ton is growing beyond the main series

The order confirms years of discussion about another Bridgerton offshoot. It also shows Netflix and Shondaland continuing to build separate stories around characters whose histories only appear in pieces on the main show.

For viewers, Violet’s perspective could add emotional weight to the advice she gives her children. Her enduring grief for Edmund has shaped the character from the beginning, while her belief in love matches has repeatedly influenced the family’s choices. A prequel can show how those convictions were formed rather than simply explaining them in retrospect.

No production schedule, episode count, cast or release date has been announced. Meanwhile, Bridgerton itself is moving ahead: its fifth season is expected in 2027 and will focus on Francesca, with a sixth season planned around Eloise. The young Violet series now joins that expanding slate as the franchise’s next major trip into the past.
