Paramount is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and game studio CD Projekt Red producing.
Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, extending CD Projekt Red’s dystopian game franchise into theatrical film. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer associated with the Transformers movies, is attached to produce alongside the Polish game developer and rights holder.
The project is in an early stage. No director, writer, cast, release date or confirmed plot has been announced, so it is not yet clear whether the film will retell the game’s central story or introduce new characters inside the same universe.
Night City is heading toward live action
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, a California metropolis shaped by powerful corporations, advanced body modification and extreme inequality. The game follows V, a mercenary whose cybernetic biochip contains the digital consciousness of rock star and rebel Johnny Silverhand.
Deadline reported that the base game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, while its Phantom Liberty expansion has reached 15 million. That audience gives Paramount an established global franchise, but the adaptation still faces the challenge of translating a player-driven story into a single cinematic narrative.
CD Projekt Red’s role as a producer should keep the studio that built the game involved as the movie takes shape. Variety separately confirmed the development and di Bonaventura’s participation, while Collider reported that the creative team and cast remain unannounced.
The franchise already works beyond the game
The planned feature will not be the first screen expansion of Night City. Netflix’s animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners demonstrated that the setting can support a separate cast and story without reproducing V’s campaign beat for beat.
That precedent leaves Paramount with several options: a direct adaptation, a story linked to familiar characters, or a new entry built around the city itself. For now, the only firm creative signpost is the franchise’s universe and the involvement of di Bonaventura and CD Projekt Red. Further production details will determine how closely the movie follows the game.
