Nicolas Cage told a New York Comic Con crowd that he expects to join True Detective Season 5, though HBO has not confirmed the casting.

Nicolas Cage appears ready to enter the world of True Detective. During a Saturday appearance at New York Comic Con, the Oscar-winning actor told the crowd that he thinks his next television project will be a season of HBO’s anthology crime drama.

The moment sounded less like a polished studio announcement than a star revealing his own news in real time. After mentioning the series, Cage joked about whether it was all right for him to be the first person to announce it. The audience responded enthusiastically.

Nicolas Cage’s ‘True Detective’ comment comes with a caveat

HBO has not publicly confirmed the casting. Representatives for the network declined to comment when contacted by entertainment publications after Cage’s remarks, so his statement is the clearest indication so far rather than a formal network release.

Cage had already been linked to the fifth season in earlier reports. TheWrap previously reported that he was being considered for the lead role of Henry Logan, a New York detective at the center of the new mystery. His Comic Con comments move the story forward, but the character name and contract details remain unconfirmed by HBO.

The new season is expected to shift the anthology to Jamaica Bay, New York, after the Alaska setting of True Detective: Night Country. Issa López, who guided the fourth season, is writing the next chapter. She has said the stories occupy the same universe and that her use of magical realism will continue.

A second major television chapter for Cage

The project would extend Cage’s relatively recent move into leading television roles. He headlined Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, a series that was canceled after one season despite receiving 11 Emmy nominations. At Comic Con, he said the experience left him interested in doing more television instead of moving from movie to movie without a break.

Cage’s possible arrival would continue the franchise’s tradition of building each season around major film performers. Earlier installments have featured Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster.

For now, the headline is Cage’s own onstage declaration. A premiere date, complete cast and official production timetable for Season 5 have not been announced.
