Kacey Musgraves answered Kristi Noem’s political swipe with a pointed joke after James Talarico attended the singer’s Dallas concert.
Kacey Musgraves turned a political swipe into a sharply worded celebrity moment after Kristi Noem criticized the country star for welcoming Texas Senate candidate James Talarico at a Dallas concert.
Talarico, a Democrat, attended Musgraves’ Middle of Nowhere Tour stop over the weekend and later thanked her publicly while sharing a photo from the show. Noem responded by saying she preferred singer Ella Langley over Musgraves and Republican Ken Paxton over Talarico.
Musgraves answers with a pointed reference
Musgraves replied on X with a dog-related joke aimed at Noem. The comment referenced the widely criticized account in Noem’s 2024 memoir in which she wrote about killing a young dog she considered aggressive and untrainable.
The exchange quickly moved beyond campaign politics and into entertainment news because Noem also pulled Langley into the comparison. Variety reported that Langley’s account was subsequently untagged from Noem’s post. There was no indication in the reports that Langley had invited or endorsed the comparison.
Billboard and Rolling Stone separately documented the posts and the sequence that led to Musgraves’ reply. Their accounts agree that the dispute began after Talarico shared his thanks following the Dallas appearance, and that Noem invoked Langley’s hit “Choosin’ Texas” while expressing her political preference.
A concert cameo becomes a viral argument
The moment shows how quickly a routine backstage or concert photo can become part of a larger public debate. Musgraves did not release a formal political statement about the exchange; instead, her brief reply relied on a reference already familiar to many social-media users.
Langley’s name also gave the spat a current country-music angle. “Choosin’ Texas” recently completed an extended run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making Noem’s wording instantly recognizable to music fans even before Musgraves responded.
As of the initial reports Monday evening, Noem had not posted another reply to Musgraves. The singer’s response, however, had already transformed an attempt to compare two country stars into a widely shared punchline centered on Noem’s own public record.
