A new Hulu and ESPN documentary will use unseen footage to revisit Michael Jackson’s landmark 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance.
Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl halftime performance is becoming a feature documentary. Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl will premiere on Hulu and ESPN in February 2027, revisiting the production that helped turn halftime into one of television’s biggest pop-culture events.
The film will include previously unseen footage of Jackson and his team preparing for the show at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Rather than presenting only the familiar broadcast, the documentary is designed to trace the planning, execution and legacy of a performance that changed what audiences and the NFL expected from the slot.
How one set reset the halftime formula
Jackson opened the Super Bowl XXVII show by rising onto the stage and standing nearly motionless as the crowd roared. His set moved through “Jam,” “Billie Jean” and “Black or White” before expanding into “We Are the World” and “Heal the World,” with a choir of about 3,000 Los Angeles-area children joining the finale.
The performance arrived after rival network programming had drawn viewers away from the previous year’s halftime show. Jackson’s appearance reversed that problem: the second half of the game attracted more viewers than the first, demonstrating that a superstar-led production could hold and expand the audience. The formula subsequently became standard, with halftime booked as a global entertainment showcase rather than a break in the football.
The filmmaker behind another major music story
Bao Nguyen directs and produces Spectacle. He previously directed The Greatest Night in Pop, the documentary about the recording of “We Are the World,” giving him a direct connection to another part of Jackson’s musical history.
The new film is produced by Skydance Sports in association with Optimum Productions and NFL Films. Its producers include Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, Lauren Gaffney, John Branca and Amit Dey. An exact February premiere date has not yet been announced.
The project arrives with a focused premise: to show how the 1993 production was built and why its influence still shapes the modern Super Bowl. By pairing archival material with behind-the-scenes footage, Spectacle has the opportunity to explain the mechanics behind a performance often remembered only through its most iconic images.
