Paul McCartney supports Sam Mendes’ Beatles films but flagged how Paul Mescal’s height looked beside the actor playing John Lennon.
Paul McCartney is enthusiastic about Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project, but one visual detail has already caught his attention. During an appearance on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the musician said he contacted Mendes after seeing a production still in which Paul Mescal, who plays McCartney, appeared noticeably shorter than Harris Dickinson’s John Lennon.
McCartney explained that the Beatles were generally similar in height, with Ringo Starr being somewhat shorter. The image showed the cast recreating the famous Abbey Road crossing, and the difference bothered him enough to send Mendes a warning not to repeat an issue he had seen in an earlier Beatles drama.
Why the Paul McCartney Beatles biopics note matters
Mendes reportedly answered that the apparent difference came from the actors’ stride pattern. He then sent McCartney another frame in which the performers looked level. The exchange was playful, but McCartney’s reaction also showed how closely a living subject can watch the small choices that shape a screen biography.
The singer connected his concern to 2009’s Nowhere Boy, where he felt the young McCartney was presented as physically smaller and less commanding than Lennon. This time, he has a direct line to the filmmaker before the movies reach audiences.
The ambitious Beatles series is planned as four connected features, each approaching the band from a different member’s perspective. Mescal will portray McCartney, Dickinson will play Lennon, Joseph Quinn will appear as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan will take on Ringo Starr. The supporting cast includes Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd and Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey.
The films are scheduled to arrive together in April 2028. They are also the first scripted Beatles movies made with the approval of Apple Corps and the surviving members, along with access to the band’s music rights. McCartney has publicly supported the project and praised Mescal, so his height complaint reads less like resistance than an early, very specific continuity note from someone who knows the history firsthand.
