Veteran sitcom producer Bruce Helford will lead NBC’s Newlyweds as production pauses, while the October 23 premiere remains on schedule.
NBC’s upcoming comedy Newlyweds has a new showrunner shortly before its television debut. Veteran sitcom producer Bruce Helford will take charge of the series, replacing co-creator Gail Lerner after her departure over creative differences.
The change comes while production is paused. A previously planned one-week break has been extended so Helford can become familiar with the show, and filming is expected to resume in November. The production completed its eighth episode of a 13-episode order before the hiatus.
A veteran sitcom producer steps in
Helford brings decades of broadcast-comedy experience. His credits include The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez, Roseanne and its follow-up The Conners. The assignment also reconnects him professionally with Jamie Lee Curtis: Helford previously wrote for Anything but Love, the late-1980s sitcom starring Curtis and Richard Lewis.
Newlyweds centers on Jeanie, a free-spirited woman played by Téa Leoni, and James, a reserved professor played by Tim Daly. After a fast courtship and an impulsive marriage, each must adapt to the other’s circle of relatives and friends. Curtis, Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Bill O’Neill round out the ensemble.
Lerner, who co-created the series with Curtis, remains credited as an executive producer. She previously said the first six episodes were completed under her leadership. Helford joins an executive-producing group that also includes Curtis and producers connected to the Tannenbaum Company and Lionsgate Television. Universal Television is the studio, while Pam Fryman directed and executive produced the pilot for NBC’s fall schedule.
Despite the behind-the-scenes transition, the premiere remains scheduled for October 23 at 8:30 p.m., after the season premiere of Happy’s Place. NBC has publicly emphasized its commitment to the romantic-comedy concept and its cast. The production restart will be the first concrete test of how Helford’s arrival shapes the remaining episodes without disrupting the series’ launch.
