Rita Wilson says she expects to reprise Evie Michaels in HBO’s five-episode Girls revival, which begins production in 2027.
Rita Wilson is preparing to step back into the world of Girls. The actor has indicated that she expects to reprise Evie Michaels, the outspoken mother of Allison Williams’ Marnie, in HBO’s newly announced five-episode revival.
Wilson stopped short of describing a signed deal, but her comments made her enthusiasm unmistakable. She said she was excited by the reunion, praised creator Lena Dunham and spoke warmly about working with Williams. Her response turns Evie from a plausible returning guest into a character viewers can reasonably expect to see, even as HBO has yet to detail the revival’s complete supporting cast.
The original ensemble is coming back
The limited run will reunite the show’s central quartet: Dunham as Hannah Horvath, Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells is also returning as Elijah Krantz. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, a decade after the original series aired its sixth and final season.
Wilson first appeared as Evie during Season 2 and returned as a guest over the course of the show. The character’s difficult, often comic relationship with Marnie gave Wilson a direct connection to one of the series’ four central storylines. Bringing her back would allow the revival to revisit not only the friends’ lives, but also the family dynamics that helped shape them.
A compact continuation, not a full reboot
The five-episode format suggests a focused reunion rather than a broad relaunch. Dunham is returning as creator, showrunner and star, while Judd Apatow is back as an executive producer. Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells will serve as co-executive producers, giving the returning performers an expanded role behind the scenes.
Girls originally ran on HBO from 2012 to 2017, following four friends through work, relationships and the instability of early adulthood in New York. The revival arrives with those characters in a different stage of life, and Wilson’s likely return offers a useful bridge to the original series. For now, the production start is set, the principal cast is assembled and Evie Michaels appears poised for another visit.
