Sony Pictures will release Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana in theaters worldwide outside India on November 6. The international opening comes two days before the film’s Indian release, which Dharma Distribution has scheduled for the Diwali period.
A mythic story designed as a global event
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Based on the foundational Sanskrit epic traditionally attributed to the poet Valmiki, the story follows the exiled prince Rama as he seeks to rescue Sita after her abduction by Ravana. Tiwari’s adaptation is planned as the first half of a two-part movie event.
The release strategy connects the film’s theatrical launch with Diwali, a festival deeply linked to the return of Rama to Ayodhya after exile and his victory over Ravana. While that timing gives the Indian opening particular cultural weight, Sony’s distribution plan is meant to bring the production to audiences far beyond its home market.
Ramayana will be released in multiple languages, including English. TheWrap reports that it is the first Indian production to receive the “Filmed for IMAX” designation, a sign of the large-scale presentation envisioned by the filmmakers.
Major crafts talent behind the two-part production
The music brings together Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. DNEG, the visual-effects company whose credits include Dune, Interstellar and Inception, is handling the film’s effects. Action choreography is credited to Terry Notary and Guy Norris, while Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal lead the production-design work.
Prime Focus Studios and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations are producing the adaptation. A trailer released earlier in the summer presented mythological weapons, large battles and an effects-heavy vision of Rama’s campaign against Ravana. The project has also been marketed internationally, including a trailer presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Part 1 will enter a crowded early-November marketplace, but the film arrives with a clear audience base among Indian moviegoers and the global diaspora. The second installment is planned for the Diwali period in 2027, extending the story and the production’s international theatrical ambitions across two consecutive years.
