Netflix is developing a live-action Ravenloft series centered on vampire Strahd, with John August, Alfonso Cuarón and Hasbro attached.
Netflix is developing a live-action series based on Ravenloft, the gothic-horror setting from Dungeons & Dragons. The project is being built around Strahd von Zarovich, the vampire ruler whose tragic transformation has made him one of the tabletop franchise’s best-known villains.
A new team enters the Mists
Deadline reports that screenwriter John August will write and executive produce the series. Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón is also attached as an executive producer, with Hasbro Entertainment involved in the production. No cast, production schedule or release date has been announced, so the show remains at an early development stage.
The planned story is expected to explore Strahd’s origins through power, love, obsession and his transformation into an undead dark lord. That premise gives Netflix a recognizable character while leaving room to introduce Ravenloft’s larger world to viewers who have never played the role-playing game.
Ravenloft replaces an earlier D&D plan
The new project is separate from the live-action Forgotten Realms series Netflix began developing in 2025. Deadline says that earlier adaptation, which had Drew Crevello writing and Shawn Levy executive producing, is no longer moving forward at the streamer. Ravenloft arrives with a different creative team and a darker identity rather than continuing that abandoned plan.
The Verge noted that the campaign setting received a recent tabletop update through Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. The timing gives Netflix a refreshed corner of the franchise to draw from, although the television series has not yet disclosed which game material beyond Strahd’s history will shape the adaptation.
For now, the strongest signals are the creative names and the choice of villain. Cuarón’s involvement adds prestige, while August’s assignment places the screenplay in experienced hands. Development announcements do not guarantee that a series will reach production, but Ravenloft is now Netflix’s active live-action route into the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
