Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed No. 1 for a sixth weekend, nearing the domestic record as the summer box office approached a historic finish.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day remained No. 1 at the domestic box office for a sixth consecutive weekend, extending a run that has pushed the Tom Holland-led sequel toward a major North American record. The film earned an estimated $18 million over the traditional three-day frame and was projected to reach about $23 million through Labor Day.
Its domestic total stood at roughly $923 million on Sunday, according to Variety. That leaves the Sony and Marvel Studios release within striking distance of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whose unadjusted $936 million total has held the domestic record since 2015.
A rare hold points toward box-office history
Six weekends at No. 1 is unusual, especially for a blockbuster that opened at the height of summer. Deadline estimated that the movie’s four-day holiday performance would rank among the stronger Labor Day holds, a result helped by relatively weak debuts from new releases.
Globally, Brand New Day has reached about $2.4 billion. Variety placed it third on the worldwide all-time list, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame but ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water. Those comparisons are not adjusted for inflation, an important qualification when films from different eras are ranked by ticket revenue.
The movie’s strength also matters beyond one franchise. Domestic ticket sales for the summer reached about $4.7 billion, according to Rentrak figures cited by Variety, putting the season close to the $4.755 billion benchmark set in 2013.
The summer record remained a photo finish
Deadline’s Sunday update described the final tally as extremely close. Rentrak had the three-day marketplace at $88 million and the summer at $4.732 billion before Monday’s receipts were included. Depending on the complete four-day result, the season could narrowly pass the old record or finish just below it.
That uncertainty means the all-time summer claim should wait for final numbers. The more settled achievement is Brand New Day’s six-weekend streak and its approach to the domestic crown. Final Labor Day grosses will show whether the holiday delivered two milestones at once: a new summer high for theaters and another step toward the top for Spider-Man.
