Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to the United Kingdom has not restored their position as working members of the royal family. New guidance circulated at King Charles III’s direction says there is no change to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s status, drawing a firm line between their private work and duties carried out on behalf of the monarch.

The clarification followed renewed public attention after the couple returned to Britain for an extended stay. Reports quoting the correspondence say Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon distributed it to government, military and regional officials on September 7 after questions arose about how Harry and Meghan should be treated at public and charitable appearances.

What the clarification means

The guidance describes the Sussexes’ charitable activity as personal work undertaken in a private capacity. It also says their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. In practical terms, they can continue supporting causes and running commercial projects, but those activities do not become official royal engagements simply because they take place in public.

That distinction matters for event organizers, public officials and audiences. A high-profile appearance by Harry or Meghan may still attract the ceremony and attention associated with royalty, yet it does not mean the couple is representing the sovereign or carrying out a state function.

The arrangement dates back to 2020

Harry and Meghan stepped away from representative royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. Under the arrangement announced at the time, they stopped receiving public funds for official duties and ceased formally representing Queen Elizabeth II, while retaining the ability to maintain private patronages and associations.

The latest letter does not announce a punishment or a new break. Instead, it restates the boundary created six years ago as the couple begins another chapter in Britain. Their residence, charitable involvement and public visibility may change, but their constitutional role has not.

For royal watchers, the message removes one source of speculation without ending broader interest in the family relationship. Harry and Meghan can remain prominent public figures in the United Kingdom, but prominence alone does not return them to the working royal structure.
