Wheel of Fortune will open Season 44 episodes with Fortune Frenzy, a rapid-fire puzzle game offering contestants an early $1,000.
Wheel of Fortune is adding a faster opening round when Season 44 premieres on September 14. The new game, called “Fortune Frenzy,” puts contestants on the clock immediately and gives them an early opportunity to add $1,000 to their winnings.
How Fortune Frenzy changes the opening
Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White introduced the format during a September 8 appearance on Good Morning America. Reports from TheWrap and E! News describe it as a rapid-fire contest at the top of each episode, with players given only seconds to solve a puzzle. The compressed timing is designed to create more gameplay without extending the program.
Seacrest said the quick challenge can help contestants move past their initial nerves by forcing them to concentrate on the puzzle in front of them. White made a similar point, explaining that the format leaves little room to think about anything except finding the answer. That makes the new segment both a prize opportunity and an immediate test of composure.
A familiar show keeps adjusting
The change arrives as Seacrest becomes more settled in one of television’s most visible hosting jobs. He took over the syndicated edition after Pat Sajak retired in 2024, ending Sajak’s 41-year run. White remained with the show, giving the current version a direct link to the partnership viewers had known for decades.
“Fortune Frenzy” does not replace the wheel, the letter board or the longer rounds that define the series. Instead, it is a compact addition meant to sharpen the first minutes of an episode. The move reflects a broader challenge for long-running game shows: introduce enough novelty to keep the pace fresh without making the format feel unfamiliar.
Wheel of Fortune has been on the air in its current lineage since 1975, so even a small structural change reaches an audience with deeply established expectations. Viewers will get their first full look at the new round when Season 44 begins Monday, September 14. Its real test will be whether the faster start produces memorable solves while preserving the relaxed rhythm that has helped the program endure.
