Netflix Cancels Ransom Canyon After Two Seasons

Netflix is closing the gates on Ransom Canyon. The streamer has canceled the Texas-set romantic drama after two seasons, ending the series before Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly could return as Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady for a third chapter.

The decision arrives roughly seven weeks after the second season premiered on July 23. The show’s latest eight-episode run opened with 4.1 million views during its first week, according to figures reported by Deadline, a 43 percent decline from the 7.2 million views recorded by season one in its opening week.

A shorter second season faced a steeper climb

Ransom Canyon had already survived one uncertain renewal cycle. Netflix ordered season two more than two months after the first-season debut, then reduced the episode count from 10 to eight and refreshed parts of the supporting cast. Although the second installment was reportedly received more favorably inside the company, it spent three weeks in Netflix’s weekly Top 10, compared with four for season one.

Created by April Blair from Jodi Thomas’ novel series, the drama followed intertwined ranching families in the Texas Hill Country. Its central romance paired Duhamel’s ranch owner Staten with Kelly’s concert pianist and lavender farmer Quinn, two longtime friends whose timing repeatedly kept them apart.

The finale offers some closure

Fans will not get the domestic storyline that the cast and creator had discussed for a possible third season. Blair had described the couple finally choosing each other as a beginning rather than an ending, while Kelly and Duhamel had both spoken about exploring what everyday life together might look like.

Still, the season-two finale leaves Staten and Quinn in a more settled place than the first finale did. Their relationship is intact, and the episode avoids the kind of major cliffhanger that would have left the main romance completely unresolved. Other threads, including a possible love triangle for Ellie and a larger role for Staten’s half-brother Levi, will remain open as the series ends its two-season run.
