Practical Magic 2 tops the North American box office with $30 million and adds $16 million overseas for a $46 million global debut.
Practical Magic 2 took first place at the North American box office with an estimated $30 million opening weekend. The Warner Bros. and Alcon Entertainment sequel ended the domestic run of Spider-Man: Brand New Day at No. 1, although its launch landed at the lower end of studio expectations.
A first-place finish with modest momentum
The film opened in more than 4,000 North American theaters and added $16 million across 77 international markets, bringing its estimated global start to $46 million. The Hollywood Reporter placed the production budget at $75 million, while Deadline reported that Warner Bros. and Alcon financed the project equally.
Those numbers give the sequel a clear weekend win without turning it into an immediate breakout. Variety described the domestic debut as disappointing despite the top ranking, and Deadline noted that the broader marketplace slowed sharply as the summer season gave way to fall. The result therefore carries two truths: the Owens sisters led the chart, but the overall audience was limited.
The Owens sisters return
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, nearly three decades after the original 1998 film. Directed by Susanne Bier and adapted from the world created by author Alice Hoffman, the sequel follows the sisters as they confront the family curse that has complicated love across generations.
Joey King, Maisie Williams and Lee Pace join the returning stars. Audience response was stronger than the initial critical reception: the movie earned a B+ CinemaScore, and Deadline reported particularly strong turnout among women, who made up 69 percent of the audience.
The first Practical Magic was not a major theatrical hit in its original run, but it built a durable following over time. That legacy gave the sequel a recognizable foundation and helped turn a long-awaited reunion into the weekend’s biggest release.
Its next test will be staying power. A $30 million opening gives Practical Magic 2 the top spot and a workable start, but the film will need continued interest from its core audience to build momentum against its reported cost and a changing fall release calendar.
