Duncan Sheik is receiving hospital care in critical but stable condition, his family said while requesting privacy from the public.
Duncan Sheik is receiving hospital care and remains in critical but stable condition, according to a statement shared by his family on the singer-songwriter’s official Instagram account. The family did not disclose the reason for his hospitalization and asked for privacy while saying it would provide further updates when appropriate.
The carefully worded notice is the clearest current account of Sheik’s health. It follows several posts from the 56-year-old musician that indicated he had spent time in a hospital in recent weeks. Those earlier updates did not identify a diagnosis, and no representative had offered additional medical details at the time of the latest reports.
A career spanning pop and Broadway
Sheik first became widely known through “Barely Breathing,” the 1996 single that earned a Grammy nomination and reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100. His career later expanded into theater, where his work on the 2006 musical “Spring Awakening” brought him Tony Awards for best original score and best orchestration.
That range has made Sheik a familiar name to both pop listeners and Broadway audiences. Beyond “Spring Awakening,” his theater credits include music for “American Psycho,” “Alice by Heart” and “Because of Winn-Dixie.” His most recent studio album was “Claptrap,” released in 2022.
Projects remain on the calendar
The health update arrives shortly before scheduled performances of projects connected to Sheik. “Memoirs of Amorous Gentleman,” an adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s manga for which he wrote the score, is due to begin previews on September 25 and open on October 15. A revival of “Spring Awakening” is also expected to begin previews off-Broadway this fall.
Neither the family’s statement nor the reporting reviewed for this article announced changes to those productions. For now, the only confirmed medical description is “critical but stable,” and the family has explicitly declined to share further details. Musicians and theater figures posted messages of support after the announcement, while the public was asked to respect Sheik’s privacy.
