Anna Faris says she has been sober for 18 months while answering Chuck Lorre’s comments about her 2020 departure from CBS comedy “Mom.”

Anna Faris has answered Chuck Lorre’s comments about her departure from “Mom,” saying the remarks caught her off guard while also disclosing that she has been sober for a year and a half.

Faris shared her response on Instagram Thursday after excerpts from Lorre’s newly released memoir, “Sitcom,” circulated publicly. She acknowledged that his assessment hurt, but emphasized that she remains grateful for the job, the people involved and the seven seasons she spent on the CBS comedy.

Faris connects the show’s themes to her own life

Her statement then moved beyond the dispute. Faris said she is healthy, working and happier than she has been in a long time. She framed the disclosure as encouragement for people facing similar struggles, noting the personal significance of having starred in a series centered on recovery before experiencing that journey herself.

“Mom” premiered in 2013 with Faris playing Christy Plunkett, a single mother working to rebuild her life while maintaining her sobriety. Allison Janney played Christy’s mother, Bonnie. Faris left before the eighth season in 2020, and the series concluded in 2021.

The memoir reopened an old departure

In his book, Lorre wrote that he initially hesitated to cast Faris and later viewed her exit as validation of those concerns. His comments challenged the public explanation issued at the time, when Faris said she was leaving to pursue new opportunities.

Faris did not offer a new detailed account of why she departed. Instead, her response focused on the work she valued and the recovery she now feels comfortable discussing. TheWrap reported that a representative for Lorre did not immediately answer its request for comment.

The exchange has revived discussion of one of the show’s biggest cast changes, but Faris’s message lands on a more personal note: she can disagree with how her former boss described the past while still recognizing the role the series played in her career.
