Avengers: Endgame Encore earned $86 million worldwide, sending the 2019 blockbuster back to No. 1 and closer to Avatar’s global record.

Avengers: Endgame has returned to the top of the box office seven years after its original release. Disney and Marvel’s Endgame: Encore collected an estimated $86 million worldwide over the weekend, including $26 million in North America and $60 million from international markets.

A rerelease competed like a new blockbuster

The domestic result came from 3,060 screens and placed the film ahead of several new releases. Internationally, the rerelease opened at No. 1 in markets including China, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Brazil. Industry reports ranked the global launch behind only the 2012 3D rerelease of Titanic among worldwide rerelease debuts.

The new run includes previously unreleased material and an exclusive preview of Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for December. That combination gave fans a reason to revisit a movie already widely available at home while turning the rerelease into a major piece of promotion for Marvel’s next ensemble film.

Premium formats played a large role. IMAX screens generated $13.7 million globally, while Disney’s newly introduced Infinity Vision certification accounted for more than half of the domestic total, according to box-office reporting. Infinity Vision is a theater-standards label rather than a new projection technology.

Endgame closes the gap with Avatar

The weekend lifted Endgame to roughly $2.88 billion worldwide over its lifetime. That leaves it within about $40 million of Avatar, which remains the highest-grossing global release. In North America, Endgame now stands at about $884 million.

The rerelease also became a bridge to a changed Marvel era. Doomsday will reunite directors Joe and Anthony Russo with a large superhero cast and bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the franchise in a new role as Doctor Doom. The preview attached to Encore effectively transformed a familiar film into an event for audiences looking toward that next chapter.

Other releases still found audiences during the crowded weekend. Resident Evil held second place domestically, while Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast and Robert Pattinson’s Primetime opened behind it. Yet the weekend’s clearest result belonged to a 2019 movie, showing that a carefully packaged rerelease can still perform at blockbuster scale.
