Betty McGuire, the stage and screen actress remembered by television audiences as Kate Malone on Growing Pains, has died at 100. Her representative confirmed that she died of natural causes on October 8 at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills, California.

A familiar grandmother on ‘Growing Pains’

McGuire played the mother of Joanna Kerns’ Maggie Seaver and the grandmother of the Seaver children on the ABC family comedy. She appeared in 12 episodes across the show’s seven-season run, recurring during the early seasons and returning later in the series. The role connected a career rooted in theater to one of the most recognizable sitcom families of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Her television résumé stretched well beyond that part. McGuire appeared on 7th Heaven, ER, CSI: Miami, Murphy Brown, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Charlie’s Angels, Little House on the Prairie and Hart to Hart. She also had multi-episode runs on Hill Street Blues and Falcon Crest. Her film credits included Coma and Up in Smoke.

Her career began on Broadway

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, McGuire made her Broadway debut as Rebecca in the 1955 musical Plain and Fancy. She later appeared on Broadway in Happy Hunting and Oh Captain!, working in productions that included performers such as Ethel Merman, Barbara Cook, Bea Arthur and Tony Randall.

McGuire also joined touring productions of Auntie Mame, Gypsy and Oliver!. That stage foundation became a defining thread in a career that moved between Broadway, touring companies, feature films and guest roles across several generations of American television.

Although many viewers encountered her through the warm family rhythms of Growing Pains, McGuire’s credits reveal a durable character actor who kept working across genres. Her career linked mid-century musical theater with the network dramas and sitcoms that later brought her into millions of homes.
