Why Joel agreed to the procedure

Joel said his early symptoms included poor balance and a persistent rocking sensation, as though he were standing on a boat. After consulting a neurologist, he was advised to have a shunt implanted to drain excess fluid and reduce pressure on his brain.

He initially resisted the idea of surgery, according to accounts published by Page Six and Consequence. After learning that the procedure could help his balance and memory, he decided to proceed. Joel said the operation improved both areas and made it easier for him to function.
