Cynthia Erivo received a TIFF standing ovation for Prima Facie, a film adaptation of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed courtroom drama.

Cynthia Erivo received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival world premiere of Prima Facie, where she introduced a new screen version of Suzie Miller’s acclaimed stage play. The demanding role places Erivo at the center of a legal drama about power, consent and a system viewed from opposite sides of the courtroom.

A celebrated stage role moves to film

Erivo plays Tessa, a successful London barrister who has built her reputation defending men accused of sexual assault. Her confidence in the law collapses after she is raped by a colleague she had been dating and must navigate the same process she previously used on behalf of defendants.

Miller adapted her own one-woman play for the film, while Susanna White directed. The screen version expands the world around Tessa with a supporting cast that includes Daniel Ings, Toheeb Jimoh, Noma Dumezweni and Simon Russell Beale. Jodie Comer originated the role in the West End production and later won both Olivier and Tony awards for her performance.

The movie gives Erivo a distinct interpretation rather than asking her to reproduce the stage version. At a post-premiere discussion, she said conversations with Black women barristers informed Tessa’s rhythm in court and the outside life she wanted the character to carry into her work. The adaptation presents Tessa as a working-class woman of color operating inside a profession shaped by longstanding class and racial hierarchies.

Erivo’s performance drives the response

The TIFF audience’s ovation offered an emphatic response to Erivo’s work, but early critics were divided on the film around her. Reviews praised her commitment and several supporting performances while questioning whether the added characters, recurring voiceover and more conventional courtroom structure retain the stage play’s concentrated force.

That tension makes the premiere more than a straightforward awards-season showcase. Prima Facie is trying to carry the urgency of a theatrical monologue into a broader cinematic form, while preserving Miller’s argument about the burdens placed on people reporting sexual assault.

The film premiered as a gala presentation at TIFF and was described as a prominent sales title at the festival. No general release date was included in the reports consulted, so the next part of its journey will depend on the distribution plans that emerge after Toronto.
