Disney has offered $20 million for selected Character.AI assets as the chatbot company begins a court-supervised Chapter 11 sale.
Disney has agreed to make a $20 million opening bid for selected Character.AI assets as the chatbot company enters Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
The proposed deal would give Disney a non-exclusive, perpetual license to certain intellectual property and claims. Character.AI described Disney as the stalking-horse bidder, meaning the offer establishes a baseline while leaving room for higher or better bids through the court-supervised sale process.
The platform will remain online during the sale
Character.AI said its app will continue operating while the company seeks a buyer for all or substantially all of its assets. The startup expects the sale process to conclude in late November or early December, although that timetable remains subject to the bankruptcy court and any competing offers.
The service is known for letting users create and interact with AI-generated characters. More recently, it has pushed further into entertainment formats, including interactive books, studio-produced microdramas and comics. In its own announcement about a leadership transition, the company said the app remained live and promised more information for its community.
Disney’s agreement also includes transition support. Some Character.AI employees who moved with former chief executive Karandeep Anand are expected to provide temporary services. Anand joined Disney in a newly created technology leadership role after the entertainment company named him its chief technology officer.
Disney is deepening its AI strategy
The bid connects Disney’s valuable character business with a company built around conversational fandom. It also follows a more complicated relationship between the two sides: Disney had previously challenged unauthorized uses of its characters on AI platforms before hiring Anand and pursuing selected Character.AI assets.
A $20 million stalking-horse offer is not the same as a completed acquisition. Another bidder could top Disney’s proposal, and the final transaction still depends on the sale process. The agreement is also for selected rights rather than an exclusive purchase of the entire Character.AI platform.
For users, the immediate message is continuity. For Disney, the bid offers a relatively small but potentially strategic route into interactive characters, fan storytelling and the technology behind AI-driven entertainment.
