Duane Davis received 40 years to life for orchestrating Tupac Shakur’s 1996 murder, while his defense confirmed plans to appeal.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur. The Nevada sentence follows a jury’s murder conviction in the only case to produce a conviction in connection with the rapper’s killing.
Judge Carli Kierny imposed consecutive terms of 20 years to life for first-degree murder and 20 years to life for a deadly weapon enhancement. Davis, 63, had faced the possibility of life without parole. His defense said he intends to appeal.
Shakur’s family addresses the court
Before the sentence was announced, Shakur’s sister Sekyiwa and stepbrother Maurice described the lasting impact of his death and asked for the maximum punishment. Sekyiwa spoke about the trauma that followed the killing and the loss of a brother she regarded as a protector and father figure.
Kierny rejected the idea that the passage of time or changes in Davis’s life diminished responsibility for the crime. Her remarks centered on the future taken from Shakur and the damage carried by his family for three decades.
A cold case shaped by Davis’s own accounts
Shakur was shot near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match. He died six days later at age 25. The investigation remained unresolved for decades and became one of music’s most closely watched cold cases.
Prosecutors argued that Davis organized the retaliatory attack and supplied the weapon, even though they did not accuse him of firing the shots. His statements in interviews and a 2019 memoir became central evidence. The defense maintained that those accounts were embellished for publicity and were not a reliable confession.
Davis was arrested in 2023 and later convicted of murder with a deadly weapon. At sentencing, he reiterated that he would appeal. The punishment closes the trial phase of a case that took nearly 30 years to reach a verdict, but the planned appeal means the legal process is not finished.
