Ed Sheeran opened his Philadelphia concert with an apology, addressed Macklemore’s removal and spoke about civilian suffering in Gaza.
Ed Sheeran opened his Philadelphia concert on Saturday with an apology for mistakes he said he made during a turbulent week for the U.S. leg of his Loop Tour. Performing at Lincoln Financial Field without his usual supporting acts, he addressed Macklemore’s removal from the lineup and stated his position on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
A direct response before the music began
Variety and Deadline reported that Sheeran told the crowd he had faced difficult decisions and was sorry for getting some of them wrong. He said he had not set out to become an activist musician, but the controversy placed him in a debate about artistic speech, touring commitments and the war.
Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates after making pro-Palestinian remarks during Sheeran’s MetLife Stadium shows in New Jersey. Variety reported that tour promoter Messina Touring Group said venues would not proceed with concerts featuring the rapper. Sheeran has said the decision was made by the promoter and venues rather than by him.
The fallout widened when Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Finneas and Sheeran’s longtime collaborators Beoga withdrew from scheduled appearances. Saturday’s Philadelphia show went ahead as a solo performance, while a small group of demonstrators gathered outside the stadium, according to Billboard.
Sheeran addressed suffering on both sides
In his remarks, Sheeran condemned the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks in Israel and described the civilian suffering in Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable. He also said injustice in the West Bank could not be overlooked. Rather than presenting himself as an authority, he told the audience he was listening, learning and speaking with people across different viewpoints about how to help victims.
The singer also raised concern about venues pre-approving what performers may say onstage. At the same time, he emphasized that his concerts should remain spaces where people with opposing views can stand together.
The remarks did not reverse Macklemore’s removal or bring back the supporting acts. They did, however, mark Sheeran’s most detailed public response since the dispute began. The Philadelphia date continued as scheduled, shifting the focus from statements released through representatives to words delivered directly from the stage.
