Harry Styles has enlisted filmmaker John Wilson to document his 30-show Madison Square Garden residency and the world around the tour.
Harry Styles is turning his Madison Square Garden residency into a documentary, with filmmaker John Wilson following the singer and the people surrounding his 30-show “Together, Together” run.
Variety first reported the project after Wilson was spotted filming Styles in New York. Two people familiar with the production told the outlet that cameras have been rolling since the residency began in August. The engagement continues through October 31, giving the filmmaker an unusually long window to observe how the show develops onstage and behind the scenes.
Not a standard concert film
Wilson is best known for HBO’s “How To with John Wilson,” a comic and quietly revealing series built from candid street footage, unexpected conversations and the rhythms of everyday life. He also directed “The History of Concrete,” which expanded his observational style into a feature.
That background suggests the Styles project may look beyond a polished performance reel. Rolling Stone, citing Variety’s reporting, described the planned film as a hybrid of live music and access to the singer’s world. It is also expected to include the fans, crew members and other people whose work and enthusiasm keep a long arena residency moving.
The format fits the unusual scale of the New York engagement. Rather than documenting a single headline concert, Wilson can capture repeated performances in the same building and the small changes that occur across weeks. That creates room for a film about the ecosystem of a major tour as much as the star at its center.
A collaboration with built-in contrast
Styles brings arena-sized spectacle and a global audience; Wilson brings a deliberately curious camera that often finds meaning in overlooked details. The contrast could separate the project from conventional celebrity documentaries that rely heavily on backstage confessionals and tightly controlled career summaries.
No release date has been announced. For now, the clearest picture is that filming is active and closely tied to the Madison Square Garden residency. If Wilson preserves his signature approach, the finished documentary may reveal not only how Styles performs, but also how an entire city-sized fan community forms around the show night after night.
