Diablo Cody says Jennifer’s Body 2 will explore the loneliness behind Megan Fox’s cult horror character, though casting is not yet confirmed.
Diablo Cody is revealing the emotional direction of Jennifer’s Body 2, saying the sequel will dig deeper into the loneliness and vulnerability behind Megan Fox’s supernatural antihero.
The Oscar-winning writer discussed the project on the Petticoat Revolution podcast, describing the follow-up as imminent while carefully avoiding plot details. Cody said she has always viewed Jennifer Check as sympathetic, both before and after the character’s transformation into a murderous succubus.
The sequel is looking beyond Jennifer’s power
The 2009 film is often remembered for Jennifer’s most confident and menacing moments. Cody’s new comments point toward a story that will spend more time with the isolation beneath that image. She praised Fox’s original performance for capturing both Jennifer’s commanding presence and the physically depleted, emotionally wounded person left after a botched ritual.
That approach fits the movie’s long critical reassessment. Jennifer’s Body was not a major success on its initial release, but it later found a devoted audience that embraced its themes of exploitation, friendship and female anger. The growing cult status helped turn years of sequel talk into active development.
Cody previously said she wanted to continue the story but needed partners who believed in the project. More recently, she confirmed that she was writing the screenplay. Original director Karyn Kusama has also said she knows some of the sequel’s basic framework and expects Cody to deliver something as wild as the first film.
Returning cast members are not yet confirmed
Fox and Amanda Seyfried have both expressed interest in returning, and Seyfried has publicly said she would not want to make the movie without Fox. However, no complete cast announcement, production start date or theatrical release date has been confirmed.
For now, Cody’s comments offer the clearest signal about the sequel’s creative priority. Rather than simply restoring Jennifer as a pop-culture monster, the new film intends to examine the pain that made the character resonate with viewers long after the original left theaters.
