Journey drummer Deen Castronovo was hospitalized after a medical emergency interrupted the band’s concert at Tulsa’s BOK Center.
Journey drummer Deen Castronovo was taken to a hospital after a medical emergency interrupted the band’s concert at Tulsa’s BOK Center on Thursday night. The show paused after the second song, but the group later resumed with drum technician Steve Toomey behind the kit.
The episode brought an abrupt stop to the opening stretch of the Oklahoma date. Castronovo had performed “Be Good to Yourself” and “Stone in Love” before he was helped from the stage, according to reports from the venue.
The band continued after a brief delay
Keyboardist Jonathan Cain first addressed the audience while the band assessed the situation. He apologized for the interruption and asked concertgoers to keep Castronovo in their thoughts. Guitarist Neal Schon later told the crowd that the drummer was heading to the hospital.
Journey then continued the performance with Toomey filling in. Singer Arnel Pineda and Schon both offered reassuring comments from the stage, although the band had not released a detailed medical update when the initial reports were published. The cause of the emergency was not disclosed.
That uncertainty is important: hopeful remarks during the show are not the same as a formal diagnosis. Castronovo’s condition and any effect on upcoming tour dates remained unconfirmed in the immediate aftermath.
Castronovo returned to Journey after an earlier run
Castronovo, 62, first played with Journey from 1998 to 2015 and later rejoined the band. In addition to drums, he has contributed vocals and has worked with acts including Bad English, Hardline and projects connected to Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai and Geezer Butler.
The current Journey lineup also features Schon, Cain and Pineda, who became the group’s lead singer in 2007. Thursday’s concert formed part of the band’s Final Frontier tour.
For fans in Tulsa, the decision to finish the show turned the night into both a concert and an expression of support for Castronovo. Until Journey or his representatives provide a fuller update, the confirmed facts remain limited to the onstage emergency, his trip to the hospital and the band’s decision to continue with a substitute drummer.
