Kathleen Turner responds warmly after Michael Douglas says their ‘Romancing the Stone’ chemistry became a secret relationship.
Kathleen Turner has offered a brief, warm response after Michael Douglas wrote that the two stars had a secret relationship while making 1984’s Romancing the Stone. Douglas disclosed the relationship in an excerpt from his forthcoming memoir, One Helluva Ride, reversing the story they had publicly maintained for decades.
Turner treated the renewed attention lightly in a statement provided to People and quoted by multiple entertainment outlets. She said the events were 40 years in the past, expressed affection for Douglas and said she looked forward to reading his book. Her response neither disputed his account nor expanded on the private details.
Douglas changes the long-standing story
In the memoir excerpt, Douglas says he and Turner “fell hard” for one another during production. He writes that he and his then-wife, Diandra Douglas, were separated at the time and says they were both involved in other relationships. He also acknowledges that he and Turner repeatedly denied that anything happened between them.
Douglas describes their connection as developing from friendship and the pressure of working closely together. According to his account, the relationship ended after Diandra visited the set with their son Cameron and made clear that she still considered the marriage intact. Douglas says Turner did not want to interfere, and he returned to his wife.
A screen partnership audiences remembered
The revelation adds a personal chapter to one of the most recognizable movie pairings of the 1980s. Turner and Douglas followed Romancing the Stone with The Jewel of the Nile and later played a viciously estranged couple in The War of the Roses. They also reunited decades later on The Kominsky Method.
Their chemistry had fueled speculation for years, even as both performers framed it publicly as flirtation rather than a relationship. Douglas says secrecy was intended to protect his family, while Turner’s response signals that she does not view the disclosure as a present-day conflict. The account remains Douglas’s memoir version of events, with Turner choosing a concise acknowledgment instead of a detailed retelling.
