Kenny Ortega executive produces LEGO Friends: Heartlake the Musical, a 50-minute live-action special built around music and friendship.

LEGO Friends has made its first move into live action with Heartlake the Musical, a 50-minute family special executive produced by Kenny Ortega and released October 16.

The story follows Daisy, played by Jada Langley, after she is transported into Heartlake City. There, she joins new friends in an effort to save a local landmark. The production combines live performers with virtual sets designed to translate the colorful LEGO Friends world into a musical screen adventure.

Kenny Ortega builds a new musical world

Ortega, whose credits include High School Musical, Hocus Pocus and Descendants, helped shape the story, choreography and casting. He also selected longtime collaborator Paul Becker to direct and choreograph the special. Final Pixel produced the project using a large curved LED stage to create Heartlake City around the cast.

In an interview with Variety, Ortega described the film as both a creative experiment and an opportunity to work for a younger audience than many of his previous projects. He said the production was completed on a modest schedule of roughly 25 or 26 shooting days, with the team treating the special as a test of how far this version of the franchise could grow.

Four original songs and a global rollout

The LEGO Group says the special features four original songs and centers on friendship, creativity, belonging and self-expression. Its official announcement names Becker as director and choreographer, Ortega as executive producer and Final Pixel as producer.

Heartlake the Musical premiered on LEGO’s YouTube channel, with additional distribution through Netflix, Peacock, Tubi, RTL and AMC Networks in selected markets. Availability therefore varies by location.

The release expands a franchise that began as a toy line in 2012 and has since moved into animation, books, digital content and live experiences. LEGO is also supporting the launch with screenings and events in several countries, including a life-size Unicorn Café installation planned for London later in October. Whether the special leads to more live-action Heartlake stories will depend on the response, but Ortega has already made clear that he hopes the experiment can become something larger.
