Kid Cudi says Kanye West offered a sincere apology before their surprise Chicago reunion, while critics question the speed of public forgiveness.

Kid Cudi is standing by his decision to reunite with Kanye West onstage in Chicago, framing the appearance as the result of a personal reconciliation rather than a blanket dismissal of West’s record of antisemitic statements and other controversies.

The two artists performed together during West’s Friday concert at Soldier Field, closing the show with “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1,” “Ghost Town” and “Pursuit of Happiness.” The appearance marked their first performance together in seven years and turned a highly public feud into one of the night’s biggest surprises.

Cudi says the apology was sincere

The reunion drew criticism online, including from New York radio personality Peter Rosenberg, who questioned the public embrace of West after his recent conduct. Cudi replied that his relationship with West stretches across nearly two decades of friendship and music, and that he had confronted him privately rather than ignored what happened.

Cudi said West apologized and that he believed the apology was sincere. He also argued that personal forgiveness can coexist with accountability. Rosenberg later clarified that his initial disappointment was directed more broadly at fans and supporters, while maintaining his concern about celebrating West so quickly.

The exchange matters because Cudi and West’s creative partnership has long been tied to their personal relationship. They released the collaborative album Kids See Ghosts in 2018 and performed together at Coachella the following year. Their relationship ruptured publicly in 2022 after West removed Cudi’s work from Donda 2, amid conflict involving Cudi’s friendship with Pete Davidson.

A reunion with unresolved questions

Friday’s set showed that the musicians have repaired at least part of that relationship. It did not settle the larger argument over West’s behavior or how the music industry should respond to it. Cudi’s defense was personal: he described a brother-like bond, years of shared art and a private apology he accepted.

West’s Chicago concerts have also functioned as a major hometown return, with a long list of guests that included Big Sean, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Travis Scott, Chief Keef and others. Cudi’s arrival carried extra weight because their split had once appeared permanent.

For listeners, the moment now has two competing meanings. It can be heard as a significant hip-hop reconciliation, but it also renews questions about whether private forgiveness should translate into public rehabilitation. Cudi has made his position clear; the wider audience is unlikely to reach the same conclusion as quickly.
