King Charles Clarifies Harry and Meghan’s Royal Status

King Charles III has formally reiterated that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remain non-working members of the royal family following their return to Britain. The clarification came in a letter sent by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon at the King’s direction after requests for guidance about the couple’s position.

The message says there is no change to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s current status. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used, while any charitable work they undertake is considered personal activity carried out in a private capacity.

Harry and Meghan’s royal status remains unchanged

The letter draws a firm line between the Sussexes and working royals who perform duties on behalf of the sovereign. Harry and Meghan stepped away from representative responsibilities in 2020 and established a life in California. Their latest move back to the United Kingdom did not reopen the hybrid “half in, half out” arrangement that had previously been ruled out.

In practical terms, the couple can continue pursuing commercial and charitable projects, but those ventures do not represent the monarch or the institution. The clarification also leaves their separate office outside Buckingham Palace’s structure.

Reports said the document was circulated not only to the couple’s team but also to government and military contacts. That wider distribution appears designed to prevent confusion over protocol, invitations and whether an appearance by Harry or Meghan should be interpreted as an official royal engagement.

A move back to Britain does not restore duties

The family’s relocation naturally raised questions because Harry and Meghan had lived in the United States for six years after leaving senior royal roles. Their children, Archie and Lilibet, also returned with them. The King’s intervention answers the institutional question without announcing a new role or altering the family’s titles.

The distinction is narrow but significant: Harry remains the Duke of Sussex and a member of the royal family, yet he and Meghan are private citizens for their professional and charitable work. Their presence in Britain may change where the family lives, but the palace framework established after their 2020 departure remains intact.
