King Harald V dies at 89 after 35 years on Norway’s throne

King Harald V of Norway has died at 89, ending a 35-year reign that spanned major social change while preserving the monarchy’s place in Norwegian public life. The Royal Court confirmed his death on August 28, and its official homepage now marks his life as 1937–2026.

A transition at the top of Norway’s monarchy

Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet, according to the palace statement cited by multiple outlets. He had recently been hospitalized with a blood infection. Flags were lowered to half-staff, while mourners gathered with flowers and Norwegian flags near the hospital and royal buildings.

His only son, Crown Prince Haakon, immediately became Norway’s monarch. Haakon’s eldest child, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is now first in line to the throne. The succession gives Norway a new sovereign without changing the constitutional limits that define the modern monarchy’s largely ceremonial role. Haakon is also expected to meet the government in an extraordinary council of state, one of the formal steps accompanying the transition.

A reign rooted in Norway’s wartime history

Harald became king on January 17, 1991, following the death of his father, King Olav V. His own childhood was shaped by the Second World War: the royal family fled Norway after the German invasion in 1940, spending part of the conflict in the United States before returning in 1945.

He later attended the Norwegian Military Academy and married Sonja Haraldsen in Oslo Cathedral in 1968 after a long courtship. Their marriage helped modernize the public image of the royal family, in part because Sonja was not born into royalty.

Harald is survived by Queen Sonja, their son Haakon and their daughter Princess Märtha Louise. His death begins a period of national mourning as the government and royal household organize the formal steps of succession and remembrance.
