Matthew Lillard says he regrets returning to Scream 7 without fully considering Melissa Barrera’s firing and the controversy around it.
Matthew Lillard has offered a candid reassessment of his decision to return to the Scream franchise after Melissa Barrera was removed from the seventh film. Speaking during a recent public Q&A, the actor said his initial excitement about reprising Stu Macher kept him from fully considering Barrera’s experience and the wider controversy around the production.
Lillard said he felt “embarrassed” about that choice and acknowledged that he had been challenged over it. His comments were unusually direct for a performer discussing a completed studio release: rather than treating the casting as a routine career move, he framed it as a decision he now believes deserved more reflection.
A franchise return with complicated context
Barrera was dropped from Scream 7 in November 2023 after social-media posts about Palestinians and the Israel-Hamas war. At the time, Spyglass Media Group said it had zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate. Barrera’s exit became a major point of debate around the sequel, while Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon also left the project. Neve Campbell later returned as Sidney Prescott.
Lillard’s connection to the series stretches back to the original 1996 film, in which Stu was revealed as one of the killers. The character was long believed dead, making Lillard’s return a built-in surprise for longtime fans. That history helps explain why the opportunity carried emotional weight for him, but his new remarks focus less on nostalgia than on the consequences of accepting the role.
Why the comments stand out
Actors often avoid revisiting a studio controversy once a film has opened. Lillard instead publicly accepted criticism and said he regretted not speaking up sooner. He also expressed support for Barrera, describing her dismissal as deeply troubling.
The statement does not undo his participation in the sequel, and it does not resolve the competing arguments that have surrounded the film since 2023. It does, however, add a significant voice from inside the cast to a conversation that has followed Scream 7 from development through release. For a franchise built on returning characters and long memories, Lillard’s reflection may become part of how this chapter is remembered.
