Meta is updating its smart glasses so the camera will stop recording when the front-facing indicator light is covered. The change closes a simple loophole that allowed users to begin filming while the LED was visible and then hide it after recording had started.

The camera will now monitor the light continuously

The glasses already refused to start a recording when the capture LED was blocked. Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of augmented reality, said the new software goes further by checking the light during an active recording and disabling the camera if it becomes covered.

Online tutorials had repeatedly demonstrated the old workaround. That made the indicator unreliable for people nearby, even though Meta presents the blinking light as the main signal that a wearer is taking a photo or video.

The update is Meta’s second privacy-related change to the product in less than two months. An earlier release disabled the camera when the glasses detected physical damage to the LED. Meta is also beginning an education campaign explaining how the indicator works.

Covert recording remains a larger design problem

The company has faced criticism after users employed smart glasses to secretly film and harass people in public. Instagram has banned some accounts associated with those videos, while inexpensive accessories designed to defeat the light have continued to appear online.

Meta says the LED cannot simply be made much larger because of the limited frame space and the appearance of the glasses. That tradeoff captures the central challenge of wearable cameras: companies want devices to look ordinary, but bystanders need an unmistakable signal when those devices are recording.

The latest update removes one widely publicized tactic rather than ending every method of concealment. Its effectiveness will depend on how accurately the glasses detect obstruction and how quickly new bypasses appear. For people being recorded, however, stopping the camera after the light disappears is a stronger safeguard than leaving the warning system entirely dependent on the wearer’s behavior.
