Mikayla Matthews Steps Away From ‘Mormon Wives’

Mikayla Matthews says she is stepping away from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, putting distance between herself and the Hulu reality series as its sixth season moves through production. The cast member announced her decision on Instagram, saying she had reached it more than a week earlier after learning information that made continued participation feel incompatible with her values.

A public exit framed around personal boundaries

Matthews did not identify one specific incident as the sole reason for leaving. In her statement, however, she objected to remaining part of a platform for behavior she does not support and said that continuing to profit from it would feel wrong. She also connected that position to her childhood experience in a home affected by abuse.

Variety and Deadline both reported the announcement on September 14. The outlets linked her remarks to the continuing turmoil around co-star Taylor Frankie Paul, while carefully noting that Matthews did not directly name Paul in the portion of the statement explaining her choice. That distinction matters because the announcement establishes Matthews’ decision and reasoning, not every interpretation surrounding it.

What the departure means for the series

The timing makes the move significant for Hulu’s reality franchise. Season 5 was released only days before Matthews’ announcement, and the latest episodes showed tension between Matthews and Paul over patterns in Paul’s personal life. Variety reported that Season 6 is currently in production, though it remains unclear whether Matthews had already filmed material that could appear in future episodes.

Deadline reported that other cast members had recently been seen filming in Italy. Matthews, meanwhile, described the show as an important part of her life and acknowledged that it had helped her support her family. She said she still intends to share her story and advocate for issues connected to health and personal accountability outside the program.

Hulu had not announced a casting replacement or explained how the production would address Matthews’ departure in the reports consulted. For viewers, the immediate development is straightforward: one of the show’s central personalities has drawn a public line and chosen not to continue under the current circumstances.
