Netflix Orders a New “Lonesome Dove” Series

Netflix is heading back to the American frontier with a new series based on Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. The streamer has given the project a straight-to-series order, placing East of Eden collaborators Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart in charge of another ambitious literary adaptation.

The creative team is already taking shape

Kazan and Stuart will serve as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers. Teton Ridge Entertainment, which controls screen rights to McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove books, developed the project and is also represented among the executive producers. Other producers include members of the McMurtry estate and Diana Ossana, McMurtry’s longtime creative partner.

The two showrunners are arriving with an established Netflix relationship. Their adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden is scheduled to debut on October 1. The new order therefore looks less like an isolated acquisition and more like the streamer extending a creative partnership built around large-scale American novels.

No cast or release date has been announced. That leaves the most obvious questions—who will play Augustus “Gus” McRae and Woodrow Call, and how soon production can begin—open for a later update.

A classic with a formidable screen legacy

McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1985 novel follows the former Texas Rangers as they drive cattle roughly 3,000 miles toward Montana. The story blends friendship, longing, violence and the cost of trying to build a meaningful life on the frontier.

Any new version will inevitably be measured against the acclaimed 1989 CBS miniseries. That four-part production starred Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, alongside Danny Glover, Diane Lane, Anjelica Huston and a deep ensemble cast. Its popularity helped make the story a television landmark rather than simply a celebrated book adaptation.

Netflix’s order signals confidence, but the challenge is clear. The new team must give the sprawling journey enough room while establishing an identity separate from performances many viewers still consider definitive. With Kazan and Stuart attached and the rights holder directly involved, the project has a clear creative foundation. Casting will be the next development that shows how this return to Lonesome Dove intends to stand on its own.
