The first full Madden trailer shows Nicolas Cage as the NFL coach, broadcaster and gaming icon, with Christian Bale playing Al Davis.
Nicolas Cage steps into the broadcast booth and onto the Oakland Raiders sideline in the first full trailer for Madden, Amazon MGM Studios’ biographical drama about football coach and media icon John Madden.
The preview follows Madden from his successful coaching years through a health-driven retirement and into the television career that made his voice familiar to generations of NFL viewers. Christian Bale appears as Raiders owner Al Davis, whose relationship with Madden helps anchor the film’s football story.
A career larger than the coaching box
Madden led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship, completing the 1976 season with a victory in January 1977. His retirement from coaching did not end his influence on the sport. He became a prominent television analyst, brought an energetic and accessible style to broadcasts, and later lent his name and expertise to the video game series that became a sports-gaming institution.
The trailer leans into that reinvention rather than presenting the movie only as a conventional championship drama. Cage’s performance highlights Madden’s exuberant delivery, while the story also explores the business and personal choices behind his move from coach to national personality.
A high-profile ensemble joins Cage and Bale
David O. Russell directed and co-wrote the movie. Kathryn Hahn plays Madden’s wife, Virginia, while Sienna Miller portrays Davis’ wife, Carol. The ensemble also includes John Mulaney as Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins and Shane Gillis as Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler.
The film is scheduled to open in select theaters on November 11 before arriving on Prime Video on November 18. That release plan gives the project a short theatrical window before reaching the streaming audience most likely to recognize Madden from broadcasts, Thanksgiving football traditions and the game franchise.
For now, the full trailer offers the clearest view of how the movie intends to connect those chapters. It presents Madden not simply as a coach, but as a figure whose second and third careers changed how professional football was explained, marketed and played at home.
