Cole Escola’s ‘Oh, Mary!’ Is Coming to HBO in 2027

Cole Escola’s acclaimed stage comedy Oh, Mary! is heading to television. HBO will debut a filmed performance in 2027, giving viewers who missed the Broadway and West End productions a chance to see Escola return as the show’s wildly unconventional Mary Todd Lincoln.

The program is not a newly adapted movie or a television remake. Deadline reports that it is a live capture of the July 28, 2026 performance at London’s Trafalgar Theatre. That distinction preserves the production’s stage format and the timing of a performance presented to a theater audience.

The London cast will appear on screen

Escola, who wrote the play and originated its central role, leads the filmed version. The captured performance also features Giles Terera as Mary’s husband, Bianca Leigh as Mary’s chaperone, Tony Macht as the husband’s assistant and Michael Urie as Mary’s teacher.

Variety says HBO revealed the project through a playful teaser featuring Escola with Sex and the City stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon. The clip places Escola’s heightened version of Mary Todd Lincoln inside HBO’s offices, turning the distribution announcement into an extension of the show’s comic persona rather than a conventional press release.

A stage hit gets a wider platform

Oh, Mary! has already built its reputation through award-winning runs on Broadway and in London’s West End. The comedy reimagines Mary Todd Lincoln through an intentionally irreverent lens, centering theatrical ambition rather than attempting a sober historical portrait. HBO’s live-capture approach lets the network offer that performance without disguising its stage origins.

The announcement also arrives as filmed theater continues to bridge the gap between a limited live run and a much larger home audience. For fans, the key benefit is access: a performance tied to one specific London date will become available far beyond the Trafalgar Theatre.

HBO has confirmed the year but has not announced an exact premiere date. Further scheduling and streaming details will therefore come later. The essential promise is already set, however: Escola’s original lead performance and the London cast have been preserved for a 2027 television debut.
