Olivia Cooke discusses Sid Baker’s Slow Horses return, the demanding night shoot and the Season 6 finale that leaves River in danger.
Spoiler warning: This article discusses the Slow Horses Season 6 finale.
Olivia Cooke has returned to Slow Horses after a four-season absence, bringing MI5 agent Sidonie “Sid” Baker back into River Cartwright’s life. The Season 6 finale completes a comeback that reopens their unfinished relationship while leaving River in fresh danger.
Sid’s return changes the emotional center of the finale
Sid appeared to die after being shot in the first season, but the show eventually followed the path established in Mick Herron’s novels and revealed that she had survived. Cooke said the production team kept her informed about the character over the years, even though she did not initially know when the return would happen.
Season 6 presents Sid as more guarded than the upbeat agent viewers first met. Cooke and director Adam Randall imagined that the character had endured a long, secret rehabilitation process after the shooting, learning to walk and speak again while largely isolated from her former life. That history gives her reunion with River a mix of affection, trauma and distrust.
Cooke filmed much of the season during five weeks of winter night shoots, often working closely with Jack Lowden. The action required climbing, running and vehicle sequences. Ironically, she said a straightforward chase scene caused her worst injury when she pulled both quadriceps while trying to keep pace with Lowden.
The cliffhanger puts River’s fate in question
Sid and River finally move toward the connection the series has teased since its first season, but the finale refuses to leave them with a simple romantic ending. River collapses in his grandfather’s kitchen after touching a crowbar that had been contaminated earlier in the season.
Head writer Gaby Chiappe explained that the creative team discussed using a flashback to spell out the cause. Instead, the episode leaves a light trail of clues and trusts viewers to connect the crowbar with the earlier poisoning plot. The choice mirrors the structure of Herron’s novel while giving the television season an abrupt final jolt.
Cooke is already looking toward the conflict created by Sid’s return. She said she wants Sid to confront Diana Taverner, the MI5 power broker whose decisions treated her as expendable. After surviving in secret and finding River again, Sid is no longer simply a character restored from the past; she now carries one of the show’s most personal scores to settle.
